Yellowknife is the capital of the Northwest Territories (NWT) with a population of roughly 18,000. It is located on the north east shores of Great Slave Lake. It is also the largest community in the NWT and is known as the Diamond Capital because there are three large diamond mines located throughout the territory.

Yellowknife is located on Treaty 11 territory, this area is home to the Tlicho Government. In their language, Dogrib, they call the city Sǫ̀mbak’è  (som-bah-kay) which means where the money is. There are over 11 different official languages in the NWT but the 5 most common languages are Dene Sulline, Dogrib, North and South Slavey, English, and French.
